Dec 10 (Thursday)
Entered the new school which has been erected by Sir George Wombwell. 44 boys and 40 girls were present at the opening. Mr E. Smith, Agent for Sir George, visited the school in the morning and again in the afternoon accompanied by Mrs Smith. The afternoon attendance was the same as the morning.
Dec 11
Rev. E. Scott visits the school; he examines the copy exercise books and hears the 1st class read. Morning attendance of 44 boys and 33 girls. No. 2 standard reading book damaged by Thomas Fisher.
Dec 16
At the request of Sir George, the children are warned against climbing on the gate and over the fence into Mr Smith's field.
1864
Jan 7
Christmas exams commence at 9.30 a.m. and occupy the whole of the day. Sir George and Lady Wombwell and Lady Villiers are present. The following gained the highest number of marks:-
1st class: W.P. Fawcett and H. Weightman
2nd class: William Caisly and E.H. Hook
3rd class: Mary Masterman and E. Ann Kirk
4th class: Rose Miller and Thomas Fisher
Feb 1
Complaint made to me about two of the 1st class boys fighting on Friday, when leaving school. I have made enquiries into the matter and cautioned them against a repetition. Marshall the pupil teacher absent from school with my permission in the morning.
July 11
Alteration in the school timetable should have a good effect on the working of the school. Bills and Elementary Book-keeping are introduced into the routine work of the school, so Geography for now is omitted.
Sept 23
Sir George Wombwell treated the scholars to a visit to Rievaulx Abbey. Assembled in the school at 8 o'clock. Sir George kindly lent his horses and wagons for the occasion and provided refreshments, including tea at Rievaulx. The day was most beautiful considering the late season of the year. Number of children 101. Several absent on account of the harvest.

A service is held at the church on account of the cattle plague. None of the Oulston or Husthwaite children at school.

Mr Nelson deserves credit for the work he has done, considering the difficulties he has had to contend (with) against the children.

Shrove Tuesday. Scholars dismissed at 11am according to an old custom.

Complaint against Rose Ada Batty and William Thompson for bad conduct at church. Rose Ada Batty's conduct both at church and school is anything but creditable to her.

Cricket match with Sutton causes several absentees.

Inspection Report. The arithmetic in school last year was not very successful, but this year was done remarkably well by nearly all. The writing maintained its high standard. Spelling satisfactory. Religious Education has been well attended to. The older children cover well in Geography. Singing pleasant to hear. Sewing very creditable. The order good.
June 23
All the Oulston children off today; Sunday schooltrip to Rievaulx Abbey.
June 27
Easingwold Show reduced the attendance at school today.
