There is much sickness in the area.

To celebrate the Relief of Ladysmith, the children were dismissed at 3.45p.m.

Miss Smith terminated her engagement her as assistant mistress today.

Apr 2
Miss Hind commences her duties as assistant mistress in place of Miss Smith.

May 28
Work was suspended at 2.45p.m. The children were taken into the playground to witness the partial eclipse of the sun which was clearly visible.


1901
Jan 14
 A new stove was placed in the large room, the old one proving unsatisfactory.

Jan 29
Miss Hind's brothers and sisters having chickenpox, which is very prevalent at Kilburn, It is advisable that Miss Hind remains at home for a few days.

Feb 5
A very rough morning, snow very deep. Only 40 children present out of 85.

Apr 26
Frank Robson, May Cleminson and her two brothers have been withdrawn.

May 3
The church organ was being tuned today and, the tuner requiring my presence, the children were granted a half-holiday.

May 7
Staff are W.W. Oates, H. Hind and S.A. Passman.

Another case of measles has occurred. G. Kendrew of Oulston is the sufferer.

May 22
Again have had to complain of the disorderly state of Miss Hind's class. The children are very talkative.

June 3
School should have reopened today; but, owing to an outbreak of measles by which nearly the whole of the children are affected, the school remains closed for a period of two weeks.

A. Sharp commences her duties as an additional teacher; Miss Hind having resigned.

Amy Deighton commences her duties as unpaid monitor.

Holiday in the afternoon, there being a special service at the church for admitting the new vicar, Rev. E. Hedger.

81 pupils present. This is checked and signed by Lady Julia Wombwell.

Apr 10
A lecture to the pupils is given by Mr Pike from the Yorkshire Band of Hope Union, with consent of the managers. His subject is the human body.

Apr 27
H M Inspector visits the school: 114 pupils are present - excellent order is maintained - a credit to the head teacher and staff, namely Mr Oates, P Sharpe, S A Passman. Also present is Rev. Hedger.

June 1
The school is closed at lunch-time as Miss Grace Taylor is giving a concert in the evening for school funds.

June 3
The school is dismissed so the children can attend the foundation stone laying ceremony at the new vicarage.

June 25
The school is closed for the remainder of the week to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII.

Aug 4
The school closes for the harvest holidays.


1903
Over the year the school register is signed very regularly by Lady Julia Wombwell on her school visits.
H M Inspector school reports are very good. The Diocesan inspections are very regular.

The school is closed - very heavy snow fall, and new boiler has to be fitted.

Attendance at school very poor due to the children helping with the haytime.

School starts earlier because of the dark days. 1st lesson 1pm until 1.45pm. 2nd lesson 1.45pm until 2.30pm. Recreation 2.30pm until 2.40pm 3rd lesson 2.40pm until 3.30pm.


1904
Feb H M Inspector visits the school. He reports that discipline is excellent and work very good. Condition of the school is very poor: no proper urinal for the boys - this is to be brought to the attention of the school governors immediately.

July 8
Headmaster invited by the secretary of the board of education to the primary drawing Royal College of Art in Kensington. This was declined owing to difficulty in staff cover. It was a limited course so the invitation was declined.

Aug 9
Miss Sharpe contacted chicken pox so was absent from school. During the summer holidays she retired from the school; her replacement was a Miss A. Deighton.

Nov 16
The school is closed for the day owing to re-opening of Coxwold Church after partial restoration.

Feb 9
Due to darkness, the school is closed early at 3.45 p.m. [There was no electricity]

Mar 6
Charles Smedley, William Smith and Maria Smedley are excluded from school as the little girl is suffering from scarlet fever.

May Attendance at school by pupils is well documented throughout the months. As a reward, on May 12 the school closes at 3.45 p.m

June 6
Many children absent from school due to hay making.

Aug 3
School is closed due to a bazaar being held at Newburgh Priory.

Aug 11
School is closed for the harvest holidays.

Sept 20
Low attendance at school due to Easingwold agricultural show.

Sept 21
Elizabeth Smith starts at Coxwold school. She has come from near Aylesbury.

Oct 16
Coxwold feast.

The attendance officer is a frequent visitor to the school throughout the year.

From October 20th 1905 to May1906, there are no records of the school in the register.

1906
May 15
The school managers provide the children with full cricket equipment.

June Lecture by Mr. E. Pike for the Band of Hope Union with the consent of the managers. He delivered to the children a short lecture on the evil effects of alcohol on the human body.

June 28
Wesleyan Sunday school excursion; the school is closed for the day.

July 9
The school closes at 3.45pm for Kilburn feast.

July 11
Notice is received that Herbert Kendrew has got a North Riding scholarship award to the Archbishop Holgate's School at York.

July 13
Good attendance at school, the haymaking harvest in the district being non general.

July 26
The school is closed; Coxwold church choir excursion.

Sept 24
William Hayton, an ex 7th standard boy, has been withdrawn today, to the mutual regret of pupils and master .

Master absent at 11.20am attending the funeral at Kilburn of the late head master of Kilburn C of E school.

Jan 28
School gardening class starts.

Mar 1
Isobel Smith leaves for Stockton. Richard Foxton emigrating to Canada. These were 2 pupils of the school.

School house used as a polling station for the District Council elections.

May 3
Boys' gardening class working well.

June 7
Rev. Hedger visits the school.

June 14
Walter Sargent and Eva Garbutt excluded from school due to scarlet fever in the family.

Nov 7
School is closed in the afternoon due to reopening of Yearsley church after restoration. This church is in the parish of Coxwold.

Nov 15
Lady Julia Wombwell visits the school gardening lesson. She is impressed by the enthusiasm of the pupils .


1908
Jan 6
Miss Amy Deighton retires; replaced by Miss Swears.

May 29
Miss Passman leaves, having being appointed as mistress at Wass school . Miss Audrey Deighton takes on as a temporary appointment.

1909
Days the school is closed throughout the year were for Empire Day, Kilburn feast, Wesleyan chapel excursion, Church choir excursion and Coxwold feast .

Feb 8
Hubert Kendrew, an ex-pupil who went to Archbishop Holgate's School in July 1906, passes the examination honours list for Cambridge University.

April 1
C. Thompson and E. Thompson win 2nd and 3rd prize at North Riding Arts and Crafts Association exhibition. N Boddy also wins a prize.

Nov 8
An essay competition on pets and how to manage them in connection with R. S P C A. The winners are Colin Kendrew, Frank Dawson, George Boddy, Maria Smedley, Edith Thompson, Florence Hardy, Beatrice Taylor and Isobel White.

Dec 22
Very windy weather.
