Very stormy. 63% of pupils present.

North Riding County Council exams. 6 pupils from the school. Rev. G. Black in attendance.

Miss Wylie ill - off work. Miss Eden stands in for her.

Mar 10

Miss Wylie returns to duty. Miss Burnett is absent due to the death of her father.

Mar 17

Stormy weather. 54% attendance in class.

June 17

Violent thunderstorm with 44% attendance in class.

July 15

Children are given a lecture on hygiene, food and drink. A report on religious instruction given by Rev. E.C. Peters MP finds that the school children were very well taught and forward on this subject.

Aug 26

Fire drill is practised in the school.

Sept 5

Visit to the school by Mr. Burton who was master at this school in 1891.

Oct 9

Visit by Mr. Slater regarding extra land purchase for the school gardens to the north west of the school.

Nov 3

During the months of November, December and January, afternoon session will start at 1.0 p.m. and finish at 3.30 p.m. to enable the pupils from Oulston to get home in daylight.


1931

Due to influenza outbreak, the school is closed.

Feb 17

School attendance still poor due to the flu outbreak. Violent snowstorms.

Attendance this month has been very poor due to sickness, and has interfered with school work.

School is closed again due to sickness and snowstorms.

Annual visit of Cookery Van. Nine girls on its course.

2 feet of snow overnight, and the storm continues. 20 pupils present out of 67. The storms have made it impossible for children from outlying areas to attend.

1932

Jan 26

North Yorkshire County Council exams attended by Rev. G. Black. 12 candidates present.

June 8

School Sports at Easingwold. School closed.

June 22

The school holds an open day for parents to see children at their work.

Oct 6

In connection with the Land Utilisation Survey, the Head teacher takes 3 boys to a remote area from the school, namely to Kilburn and district, and completes a rough Land Survey.


1933

Jan 9

Chickenpox and flu. 58% attendance.

Jan 18

Usual exams with Rev. G. Black in attendance.

Jan 19

Cookery Van No 3 arrives. 10 senior girls on the course.

Feb 23-27

Violent snowstorm. Only 27 children present.

Feb 28

Rapid thaw; roads are flooded, school boiler house deep in water; no heating. 16 children present. The school closes; reopened on March 1st.

May 3

School closed. Sports day at Easingwold.

June 13

Wesleyan anniversary at Oulston. School closed.

June 19

School closed. Coxwold Church Sunday School excursion to Scarborough.

June 21

New area of garden has now been cultivated on the nothwest side of the school, but it is very difficult to work. We hope to mix it with grit, lime, rubble and manure.

Sept 6

Secretary instructs Head teacher to remove the name of Vincent Brooksbank from the school register on the advice of the school Medical Officer (epileptic) so that he can attend a Public Elementary School.


1934

[M] Parents of Edward Sargent asked for permission for him to remain at school until the age of 15 years. The managers granted permission.
[M] A tender from Mr Hoyle of Tollerton for installation of lighting in the school at a cost of £9.

1935

Jan 16

General exams. 6 children attend.

Feb 4

A new table has been prepared for the school, and comes into force on April 1. Seniors in charge of Head Master, Juniors under the charge of Miss Burnett, Infants under the charge of Miss Wylie.

May 3

Silver Jubilee. School closed.

May 17

School closed for sports at Whitby.

Potato picking holidays.

Nov 6

School closed for wedding of Duke of Gloucestershire to Lady Alice Scott.


1936

[M] Mr. G. Kendrew elected as a school manager, filling the vacancy of Mr. J. Kendrew who had died. Mr. W.S. Taylor of Low Parks also elected as a school manager.
[M] Due to a fall in the number of school pupils, Miss Burnett's post as teacher was to be discontinued. Managers agreed that a £10 grant be given to her in recognition of her work for the school.
[M] School managers informed that Mr J W Sanderson had accepted headmastership at Margrave Park school.

Severe snowstorms. 21 children present.
Coke arrives for the boiler. 3 tons 17cwt 1 quar.

Children outside cleaning up the garden: this has been prevented lately due to poor weather conditions.

Miss S. Burnett is transferred to Wombleton C of E School, due to decrease in school. 52 pupils now on school register.

May 19

Coronation celebrations. School closed.

June 9

School Sports at Easingwold.

June 11

School closed. Half term. G.Lickiss, H. Smith, A. Rymer, Cliff Banks and Joyce Sanderson visiting Edinburgh.

July 14

School Sports at Whitby. Competing for the school: Muriel Smith.

Visit of School Dentist to extract teeth by gas.

Head master absent at North Yorkshire County Council Education department at Northallerton regarding his appointment as Head Teacher at Hinderwell.

Dec 13

Snowstorms. 43% attendance of pupils.


1938

[M] Mr. Maurice Houlston had been appointed to take charge of the local branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank which would be held in the school on Monday evenings; this was granted.[M] An interview was to be arranged with Miss Harburn for the post of headmistress.

Children out on nature walk to see buds on trees and bushes, etc.

June 8

Science will be replaced by gardening operations, crafts will be replaced by English composition.

Coxwold School closed due to Church Sunday School excursion to Scarborough.

Aug 19

Mr. Sanderson terminates his duties as Headmaster at Coxwold C of E School.

Aug 29

Miss Harburn starts as new Head teacher, with a six-month probationary period.

Sept 1

Mrs. Featherstone starts work as new caretaker at the school.

Sept 15

School assemble outside the school to see Queen Mary pass by at 12 mid-day and again at 3 p.m. on her return from Newburgh Priory.

Oct 19

Miss Bramwell gives a horlicks demonstration.

Nov 7

Cookery Van arrives. 9 girls attend the 3-week course.

Dec 20

Very heavy snowfall.

Dec 21

School Party and Prizegiving.

Dec 22

More snow. Only 16 pupils in class. Pipes nearly cold. No coke has arrived. Children sent home at 10.30 a.m.


1939

Jan 11

Bad weather. Only 36% present.

Jan 18

General exams. 3 children participate under the supervision of Rev. G. Black: Kathleen Marsh, Alan Witty and Henry Taylor.

Feb 10

Dentist at the school to extract children's teeth by gas.

May 4

[M] Parents had informed the managers about the severe discipline by Miss Harburn and the keeping in of pupils after school. The managers were concerned about this as quite a lot of pupils lived along way off from the school and had to walk home in the dark. The managers thought that every effort should be made by the teacher to gain the affection and good will of the pupils.

The garden is suffering from wire worm and rabbits.

Sept 4

Mr. Clayton, Groves, Hollbrook, Hews, Sparrow, Walkington deBoer in charge of evacuees from Middleton Street Boys' School, Hull. 30 boys came. Pupils on register now 90. The school is divided into 10 different types of curriculum.

Sept 29

Visit from Hull Liaison Officer to see the evacuees.

Oct 4

Mr. Amos sends a man to repair the boiler. In the course of repair it bursts. No heating, so the school is closed. 84 pupils present.

Oct 4

Staff now run by Mr. Goronwy, Miss Harburn and Miss Wylie recall to Hull Messrs Clayton, De Boer, Groves, Haws, Sparrow, Holgate and Walkington.

Oct 19

Central heating now adequate. A secondhand boiler has been put in.

Dec [M] A grant of £2 was made to buy fret saw work tools for Mr Goronwy's class.

Dec 20

School Party and Prizegiving. Many parents present.
