Helen Ward and Pauline Metcalfe have passed the test for entrance to Grammar School.

Mrs. Averill's appointment terminates. Miss Clifton takes over temporarily.

Miss Clifton ceases duty.

Miss Betty Bateson commences duty.

Visit of the new vicar, Rev. R.L.H. Lloyd.

A pupil is sent home because of dirty clothes. Her father then keeps her at home.

Visit of Mr. Clegg to investigate transport problems.

Heavy snowstorm. Taxi takes children home early. Children from Fox Foot are sent home on bicycles.

Miss Bateson leaves school at 11a.m. to go to Northallerton for an X-ray.

Dec 14

Bryan Metcalfe falls at school and dislocates his fingers. Fingers later found to be broken.

Dec 15

Severe snow storm. Very poor atttendence.


1951

Jan Influenza outbreak. Very poor attendance.

Jan Inspector's report: school not satisfactory - dust and sanitary problems.

Jan 15

No coke; temperature 43º. County Hall notified.

Jan 17

Coke delivered. Head teacher has got flu; Miss Bateson in charge of school.

Jan 18

[M] A new manager, Rev. R.L.H. Lloyd, is appointed to replace Canon Black who has died.

Feb 6

Head teacher resumes duties. Miss Bateson has flu. Canteen server has flu, and Mrs Buckler attended to serve.

Feb 19

Taxi re-routed from Oulston, to pick people up from Thornton Hill.

Apr 9

School re-opens after Easter. 72 pupils on register.

May 25

School re-opens after Whitsuntide holidays. The Buckler family have left the district; now 67 children on register.

May 22

Jennifer Miller sent home with whooping cough. Later her brother and sister are sent home.

May 28

Many children have bad coughs. Whooping cough and chicken pox epidemic.

June 19

Donald Turnbull dislocates his fingers whilst playing cricket.

June 20

More children with chicken pox; 27 children at school. Mr Pearson PTI called, but left immediately on learning of low attendance.

July 2

Slight improvement on attendance after the infection outbreak.

July 12

Dennis Robinson is granted a transfer to Scarborough technical college.

July 31

Heavy thunderstorms. Children late for school - arrive 10.20 a.m. Fox Foot children arrive later - the car has refused to start.

Aug 2

Mary Chambers, Gladys Houlston, Mary Smith, Sheila Metcalfe, Dennis Robinson and Jennifer Miller transfer to new schools.

Oct 1

Agricultural employment cards are distributed to children over 13 years of age.

School dentist visits to fit Elsie Carr with dentures.

Nov 28

HM inspector visits briefly for the older boys and girls. They have achieved an average standard in the report, which also says that the Headmistress needs to give a more vigorous and positive lead.


1952

Jan 17

Ms. Hugill is temporary head. Miss Bateson ill.

Jan 28

School dentist visit; some children have teeth extracted.

Jan 30

Heavy snow storm; roads blocked. Taxi is unable to get to school.

Feb 14

King George VI's funeral. The school listen to the broadcast of the service. Two minutes silence observed at 2 p.m.

Seven boys play truant to follow the hounds.

Apr 28

Miss C. Verity attends school as a teaching student.

May 4

A pan of hot water is accidentally knocked over, scalding Alan Houlston, 8years old. He is later sent home

May 9

Robin Turnbull is absent from school; he said he went to Middlesbrough for pleasure.

July 11

School sports at Easingwold; the juniors win the Adela-Shaw shield.

July 22

PC Milestone comes to school to question R. Cumming about a missing fountain pen, school scissors and a cutting knife. Kathleen Robson is sent home violently sick.

July 23

Dorothy Robson complains about feeling dizzy and about a peculiar sensation in her legs. Dr McKim comes and then sends her home.

Sept 9

Six boys are late for school. They have visited the wreckage of a plane, which crashed at Fox Foot farm.

Oct 27

Miss Bateson returns to school after her marriage to Mr A Watson.

Dr Gray is called to see R. Cummings; he is also consulted about Avril Thompson's peculiar habits.

Dec 18

[M] Concern by managers about education in the school.

 Mrs Watson leaves her teaching post at the school.

[M] Managers confirm that Miss Florence Oates has been appointed as new head teacher.

Heavy snow storm; poor attendance due to poor road conditions. Nearly impossible to travel.

Heavy snow; temporary Head teacher is unable to travel.

[M] Mr Robert Miller was proposed as the new caretaker of the school with Mr Herbert Smith as second choice.

Mar 12

Temporary head, Mr Bookland, terminates employment at school.

Mar 15

Miss Hepburn is temporary Head teacher, assisted by Miss Ingle.

Miss Florence Oates commences duties as new Head teacher. Mrs Rymer finishes at school canteen.

Mrs Miller starts duties at the canteen.

Joy Miller qualifies for Easingwold Grammar School.

June 24

Dr Gray recommends 2 children to a special school after he examines them for 2 hours.

June 30

The children of the school listen to the broadcast of the Eclipse of the Sun on the radio. Heavy cloud and rain prevent them seeing anything locally.

School dentist comes to school to extract teeth from certain pupils by gas.

All Halloween party 2.30 - 3.30 p.m.

[M] It was agreed that £6 be made available for new sanitary arrangements at the school house. The bank balance was £98-19-8d.

Richard Breed is kept at home by his parents; they refuse to let him walk to school on his own.

Miss Henderson returns to duty.

Miss Gladys Kay is appointed as head cook at the school canteen.

School dentist calls at school to take plate fittings of Eric Robson for false teeth.

The central heating system is turned off; fumes are filtering into the school due to birds nesting in the chimney.

Derek Sargent falls in the school playground and cuts his chin open.

Feb 20

Northern Dairies leave only 30 bottles of milk instead of 33.

Feb 29

Susan Tuke, Jennifer Turnbull, Mervin Metcalfe and John Taylor are selected to take part II examinations.

May 7 & 10

Northern Dairies do not leave any milk.

May 14

Jennifer Turnbull attends Easingwold School regarding scholarship exams.

[M] Rev. H. Broughton is appointed as a new governor.

Mice are found in the cupboards: pest control officer is called.

Fumes from the boiler are affecting the pupils in school; the boiler house is locked up and the caretaker is away for the day potato picking.

Miss Henderson not in school; she has gone to West Sussex for an interview.


1957

Salary of the Head teacher is £872.17.2d.

Feb 21

A visit by the school to Newburgh Mill sawmill to see the water wheel and timber being sawn; they also see an electric saw and plane at work.

Feb 24

Northern Dairies again fail to leave any milk.

Mar 11

David Rushforth, Raymond Houlston, Sheila Houlston and Susan Passman qualify to take part II examination.

Apr 10

11 children to be immunised against polio in the afternoon at the Village Hall.

Apr 21

Freddie Sargent falls against the school wall and cuts his head.

May

Dr McKim is appointed as correspondent to School Governors.

June

Letter to school governors thanking them for the £3.00 given to the school towards an outing to Lake Windermere. They had all enjoyed the boat rides, teas, even the ice cream, which the Head teacher bought them all; signed John Taylor. Also a similar letter signed by Susan Tuke, who says that she is "looking forward to going to the 'big' school at Easingwold".

Raymond Houlston passes his examination for the Grammar School.

July 30

Miss Henderson absent due to the death of her brother.

Sept 9

Miss Oates absent due to illness.

A letter has been circulated re the Bell tower. The Estate are submitting the question to the School Governors for the removal of the Bell Tower.


1958

E. Kendall, Easingwold, is paid £39.16.6d for the external painting of the school.

Head teacher is at Northallerton for interview for Helmsley School.

Feb 5

Nurse Harris visits school to inspect the children.

Feb 25

All roads blocked by heavy snow fall.

Mar 3

Eddie Jeffery, Alan Skilbeck, Susan Metcalfe and Jean Robinson qualifiy for part II examination.

All roads blocked by snow; only 9 children present at school.

Mar 11

Head teacher buys a maypole and a gramophone from money raised at a jumble sale.

A letter is sent to Newburgh Estate's Agent re the dangerous condition of the Bell Tower.

No reply from the above; a reminder is sent.

Alan Skilbeck qualifies for grammar school.

School is closed for the day; all children go to Scarborough by train.

Repairs to drains carried out by J. Bell, Thirsk, at a cost of £70.1.6d.

Erection of a new boiler house above ground for £362.18.3 by F. Hardy & Sons, Helmsley.

Dec 12

[M] The bell tower has now been removed and the roof made good. The nominal rent for the school of 2s-0d per year has been paid over the past few years by Mr. W.S. Taylor.


1959

Report re the School House: damp, far too large; no sanitation; beck floods up to rear entrance and next door, and cow manure is continually splashed against windows and porch from the road outside.

Simpsons from Sinnington carried out internal painting of the school at a cost of £210.10.0d.

School bus unable to get pupils to school because of heavy snow.

Brownies granted free rent of school from County.

Mar 3

David Robson, Ann Pybus, Shirley Tuke, Margaret Tuke and Mary Brown take part II examinations.

School caretaker's wages increased for elections, a minimum payment of 10s0d.

Apr 17

Bernard Powell is in serious trouble for bad language and smoking.

May 26

Anne Pybus, Mary Brown and Shirley Tuke pass exams for Grammar School.

June

Miss Oates sends letter of resignation as head teacher, to terminate at the end of the year.

June 10

Robert Burn absent from school; he went to Easingwold show. Miss Henderson has a word with his mother in the evening.

Miss Henderson ill.

John Teal is to attend speech therapy at Easingwold.

Sept

Swifts from Thirsk carry out alterations to the heating system at a cost of £116.12.0d.

Sept 19

Miss Henderson goes to Northallerton for an interview to be Head teacher at Coxwold School. She is accepted and appointed on the same day. (She had been assistant at Coxwold School.)

Sept 23

New wireless and 2 new speakers are sent to school from Northallerton. This was a needless expense as the old one was in perfect working condition.

Nov 12

Anne Pratt is sent home poorly.

Nov 26

[M] Miss Oates has resigned and a collection in the school has raised a grand total of £6-10s-10d. The new head teacher appointed is Miss Henderson.

Dec 17

Miss Oates retires as Head teacher.
