Water sample, taken from the school canteen, is tested unsatisfactory.

New assistant teacher, Miss Pearce, starts.

David Sargent falls and breaks a bone in his wrist.

Rev. Alun Morris attends school today for the first time. 27 children on school register.

Mrs. Hornsey retires from teaching. Mr. Gorning to assist at school two half days per week.

Mrs. E. Monfield takes charge of the school in the absence of Miss Petty.

Deputy architect examines the school building; he is concerned about the exterior stone work. [Is this the beginning of the end of a school at COXWOLD?]

Mrs. Welford resigns as canteen assistant after 17 years' service. Mrs. Miller starts as temporary assistant.

Another routine inspection by the architect. [I wonder why]

Dec 10

School nativity play cannot be acted to the public because of concern for public safety; reason given is that all doors open inwards. The nativity play is acted without any public audience.


1971

Jan 4

Mrs Metcalfe is appointed as canteen assistant supervisor

32 children on school register.

Feb 12

P.C. Surtees, road safety officer, in school.

Feb 19

A meeting has been arranged for March 9th with all parents and mangers to discuss the future of Coxwold school. Also in attendance will be the chief education officer.

Mar 9

The meeting is held in the school. Many parents attend, but the future of the school is not very good news. Attended also by Mr. J. Verity, Rural District Councillor and County Councillor Mr. Coates.

July Six children transfer to Easingwold School.

Oct 11

Miss Petty goes into hospital. Miss Bickerton in charge of school.

Nov 17

Nurse Thomas makes a routine inspection of pupils.

Nov 27

Very heavy snow storm. 14 pupils present out of 26. Miss Pearce unable to travel from Easingwold.

Dec 15

[M] Miss Bickerton is acting head teacher.


1972

Jan 31

All the toilet systems are frozen up after a very severe frost.

Feb 3

Toilet systems start to thaw out.

Feb 7

Andrew Marsh falls 6 feet over the wall into the girls' toilet area. He is sent home badly shaken, but he returns to school the next day very shaken and bruised, and very sore.

Feb 28

P C England calls at school due to a complaint that three boys have been seen chopping part of the school fence down.

Mar 1

Helen Bradley falls and hurts her neck. She is sent for an X-ray. Mr. Baines takes her home.

Mar 14

29 pupils on the school register.

Apr 18

Miss G Kay starts back at the school canteen after being off ill.

May 10

Children are given a good telling off for playing in the school grounds in the evenings.

There seem to be quite a lot of visits to the school by the County architect and building inspector. [I wonder why.]

Sept 6

A new infant teacher, Mrs Sanderson, replaces Mrs Boddy (Pearce).

Oct 29

28 children on the school register.

Dec 13

[M] Mrs. Cable is to start as new teacher in the New Year. Dr. Mc Kim retires as a governor.

Dec 22

Mrs Sanderson finishes her contract at the school.


1973

Jan 4

Mrs. Cable starts as new infant teacher. 35 children on the school register.

Jan 24

Mrs. Mayhew starts at canteen as temporary assistant.

Mar 8

Mrs. Bradley telephones the school, saying that she is not satisfied with her childrens' progress at school.

Apr 9

Mr. William Robinson begins his duties as part time groundsman at the school.

May 1

36 children on the school register.

May 9

Mrs Mayhew terminates her duties as supervision assistant at the school canteen.

Sept 3

34 pupils on the school register.

Sept 27

Miss Petty is informed that the new Head teacher at the new school at Husthwaite will be the Head teacher from Husthwaite C of E school.

Oct 19

Mrs. Cable leaves early for an interview.


1974

[M] School governors are Capt. V.M. Wombwell, Mrs. Wombwell, Rev. A. Morris, Mr. Burnett and Mr. P. Featherstone.

Jan 4

36 pupils on the school register.

Mar 5

Miss Petty goes to Snape school for an interview for a teaching post at that school. Mrs Dand, supply teacher, attends.

Mar 14

Debra Taylor is taking tests for a hearing problem.

Apr 5

Miss Petty resigns as Head teacher.

Apr 22

Mr Watson appointed as new Head teacher. Mrs. Cable in charge of seniors.

May 2

The school plays competitive 7-a-side football.

May 10

The children and parents visit Nunnington school at rounders. A return visit is arranged for May 23rd.

June 25

Mr Cameron from Smiths Gore visits the school and examines the fabric. He finds that the school building is in very good repair and the building is perfectly sound.

June26

School trips are made to Harewood House, Byland Abbey, Coxwold pottery and Newburgh Priory. All the children are very well behaved.

July 5

This is invasion day. Vivienne Metcalfe, Michael Pateman, Sarah Baines, Mervin Burn and Gillian Featherstone visit Easingwold school.

July 15

Mrs Adamson and Mrs Fox visit the school and collect books and equipment for the new school at Husthwaite.

July 18

Today the school at COXWOLD closed after 111 years . To commemorate the closure a farewell party was held. All parents, grandparents and people connected with the school both past and present were invited. Captain Wombwell presented books to all the children in the school. Presentations were also made to Mrs Miller, Miss Kay, Mrs Sargent, Mrs Metcalfe, Mr Watson and Mrs Cable.

The following morning, a guitar concert was held for everyone. The party was a mixture of sadness and joviality with thanks expressed to all who had helped. Rev Alun Morris flew the church flag at half mast. This was a sad day for parents and children and for Coxwold. Mrs Cable took up a teacher appointment at Sutton-under-Whitestone school. The head teacher thanked all staff and helpers and in his final summing-up said "Finally, in closing, I would wish well in the future to all children of this school. I now pronounce this school closed".

Rev Alun Morris flew the flag at Coxwold church bearing the cross of St George halfway up the flag pole. Someone phoned him up to ask who had died; he answered that Coxwold school had.
