Emblem of my Work
Which author or artist has made these emblems?
Clue: the one in the middle is Laurence Sterne.
A unique exhibition opens at Shandy Hall on 3 September 2011 that should appeal to both lovers of art and literature. 169 artists and writers have been invited to represent their work in a way similar to that in which the 18th century writer Laurence Sterne left his individual mark of creativity in 1761.
In Vol III (page 169) of Tristram Shandy, the 'celebrated genius' of Coxwold uses a marbled page in the middle of the book to declare that it represents what Sterne calls the ‘emblem of my work’. As the page is marbled and hand-made, it means this page is different in every copy of every edition of the book - chance determines its appearance.
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of this beautiful and experimental approach to story-telling, 169 contemporary artists and writers have risen to the challenge and made the ‘emblem of their work’ - and each one is made on hand-made paper in a space the same dimensions as the original marbled page.
Each work has been generously donated to the Laurence Sterne Trust and all will be for sale by auction.
Contributors include: Quentin Blake, Alison Wilding, Lemony Snicket, Ralph Steadman, David Rudkin, Martin Rowson, Iain Sinclair, Lavinia Greenlaw, Robert Coover, Christian Bok, Tom Phillips, John Baldessari, Tom Wood and Leanne Shapton.
The Emblem of my Work exhibition opens on 3 September and continues until 31 October. Daily 11am – 4.00pm except Saturdays.
Contact: Patrick Wildgust Shandy Hall, Coxwold, York. YO61 4AD. 01347 868465. www.laurencesternetrust.org.uk Exhibition blog: www.emblemofmywork169.blogspot.com
The exhibition is part of Art in Yorkshire - supported by Tate, a year long celebration of the visual arts in 19 galleries throughout Yorkshire. Works from Tate's Collection of historic, modern and contemporary art will be showcased through a compelling programme of exhibitions and events.

Mister Macaroni and his bungling troupe of players come to Coxwold for a highly entertaining evening of Georgian comedy: Laurence Sterne’s major works, A Sentimental Journey & Tristram Shandy - as you’ve never seen them before.
In A Sentimental Journey we follow the absent-minded, and easily distracted, Parson Yorick as he encounters an assortment of lords, ladies and chamber maids in his travels through France and Italy. Things get complicated: he forgets that England is at war with France, he doesn’t have a passport and he finds himself stranded in a storm in the mountains.........
Tristram Shandy introduces us to the love story of Captain Toby Shandy and the Widow Wadman. Just how serious is the Captain’s war wound, and will it influence the outcome of his “amours”?
Founded in 1988 HC Productions has built a reputation for staging colourful productions with a strong 18th century flavour. The Company has performed at the Newcastle Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and toured extensively in Germany featuring at the International Shakespeare Festival in Neuss.
Tickets online or send a cheque payable to ‘The Laurence Sterne Trust’.
Please note seating is unreserved.

Christian Bök
Artist-in-residence at Shandy Hall
Christian Bök (Professor of English at the University of Calgary) is perhaps best known in the UK as the author of Eunoia (Coach House Books, 2001) which became a bestseller. This delightful and astonishing work of experimental literature won the Griffin Prize for Poetic Excellence. He has also earned many accolades for his virtuoso performances of sound poetry (particularly the Ursonate by Kurt Schwitters).
His current project is The Xenotext Experiment which will involve the encoding of a short verse into a sequence of DNA in order to implant it into a bacterium, after which Christian plans to document the progress of the experiment for publication.
His visit to England has been singled out for particular mention on Ian McMillan's The Verb.
During his stay as artist-in-residence at Shandy Hall, Christian will be giving two talks - on 19 May he will be at the University of York and on 23 May at the University of Northumbria. For further details contact the Laurence Sterne Trust.
